ARE Baristas Stamp their Ground Around the Nation
22 December 2015
This year has seen our Baristas compete in a number of external events. A Queensland based team travelled to Sydney and represented Velocity in the National Coffee Chain Championships where we made it to the 2nd day of finals and finished a credible 4th. Other competitors included MCafe, Gloria Jeans & Coffee Club to name a few.
Other competitions attended by our Baristas this year were the Fine Food Barista Comp in Sydney, The Queensland Latte Art Championships (Matt Reece of Coolangatta - 3rd place), The Brisbane Airport Barista Competition (Lucy McNamara of Bar Roma – 1st place for domestic terminal) and there were also a couple of Latte Art Smackdowns in Queensland.
However, the biggest competition for 2015 was of course ARE’s own annual National Barista Competition, held this year at the Sydney Qantas Terminal in the Qantas Heritage Museum. The competition was very close with Jeff Martinez from Sydney T2 the winner, 2nd Kayla Hanna (Coolangatta) and 3rd Jasmine Thomas (Coolangatta). Sydney Terminal 2 also took out the ‘Site of the Year’ title by half a point over Coolangatta with Brisbane in third place.
”This past year has been extremely busy from a coffee perspective, ARE has opened ten new coffee outlets on airports. With these additional outlets this also means the number of baristas has increased. I am looking forward to next year and would like to see more of our baristas competing in external competitions. If you speak to any of the baristas who competed this year I am sure they will tell you that the exposure to competition has not only improved their own skills but also those they work with. Should anyone have any questions or want to know what competitions and events are coming up please contact me at Coolangatta ”
